The Covid-19 pandemic made artists and cultural professionals more vulnerable to intellectual property violations, especially as new virtual spheres have emerged with cases of IP violation rights. Therefore, the development of intellectual property protection strategies have become crucial to ensure that the rights of professionals from the cultural and creative industries remain secured and sustainable.
Building on the momentum of the 2021 International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development proclaimed by the United Nations (resolution A/RES/74/198), for which UNESCO is fully committed alongside UNCTAD, the UAE National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, and the French National Commission for UNESCO (CNFU) jointly host a webinar on the ‘Intellectual Property for the Sustainable Development of Cultural and Creative industries (CCI)’. The objectives of the webinar include raising awareness on the role of intellectual property protections and how they can support CCIs. In addition, it aims to explore best practices towards ensuring that artists, creatives and cultural professionals’ livelihoods are protected and adaptable to the digital transformation.
The webinar will host various specialists in this field and representatives from international organizations including the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), among others, as well as from the French Ministry of Culture, the UAE Ministry of Culture and Youth, and civil society. Participants will be invited to provide presentations on their organisation’s related work before taking part in a panel with key questions from the two host Commissions concerning intellectual property of CCIs.
