THE M A T I C E N S E M I N A R STOYCHO KARAVELOV – THE FIRST BULGARIAN ENGINEER-METALLURGIST, FOUNDER OF MINING IN OUR COUNTRY
(The history of germanium crystals and the kinship of Eng. Karavelov with the revolutionary poet Lyuben Karavelov)
On April 21, 2023 (Friday) at 11:00 a.m. in the exposition of the National Polytechnic Museum (NPTM) a thematic seminar dedicated to the life and work of Eng. Stoycho Dragoev Karavelov will be held.
Attention will be focused on one specific artifact from the NPTM exhibit – a glass ampoule with several germanium crystals accompanied by a donation inscription. These are one of the first experimentally obtained crystals of the chemical element germanium. The jar was handed over to the museum for free storage exactly 30 years ago and is of exceptional value. On the one hand, because of the history related to the discovery of the chemical element, and on the other hand, because of its connection with the name of the Bulgarian engineer Stoycho Karavelov.
The forum is organized jointly with the “Chemistry and Pharmacy” section of the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria. It will be attended by museum specialists from NPTM and house-museum “Lyuben and Petko Karavelovi”, town of Koprivshtitsa, teachers and students from University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy (HTMU) and Faculty of Pharmacy at Medical University – Sofia. Eng. Lyuben Karavelov, grandson of Eng. Stoycho Karavelov, will also be present at the event, who will share his memories of his famous grandfather.
The thematic seminar corresponds to the educational policy of the National Polytechnic Museum, aimed at the implementation of joint activities with representatives from academic circles.
The museum is an appropriate environment to assist students in acquiring practical work skills.
