With over 200 events throughout the country, Bulgaria will once again participate in the European Heritage Days (EDH) initiative under the title “Europe, Common Heritage”. Every year in September, the 50 countries that have signed the European Cultural Convention participate in EDN – a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission. It involves more than 20 million European citizens, making the Days the biggest and most shared cultural event not only in Europe, but also in the whole world. For more than 25 years, EDN has gathered people from the countries of Europe as a big family with one idea: to get to know and appreciate their heritage, to feel the connections between European peoples created thanks to it.
This year’s edition of EDN also coincides with the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Convention for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. In accordance with the resolution of the Ninth Session of the General Assembly, a global campaign is planned in 2023 to mark the anniversary with a series of activities to showcase the diversity and richness of the living heritage and to raise awareness of the importance of its conservation.
The calendar of the holiday program in our country has been prepared by the Ministry of Culture, as the national coordinator of the EDN in our country, together with the municipal administrations, which for years have been actively assisting in the promotion of the rich cultural heritage of the regions and the country.
Dozens of creative workshops, art studios, performances, festivals, reenactments, concerts, talks, literary readings, lectures, round tables, children’s educational programs, etc. will be held in September in 60 municipalities throughout the country. The hosts of these events – museums, libraries, ethnographic complexes, community centers, galleries, cultural and natural sites, will provide free entry for their guests on September 16 and 17, 2023.
