To the MUSEUM COLLEGE
IN THE REPUBLIC BULGARIA
Dear colleagues,
Like any in the last 43 years and in 2021 – on May 18, we will celebrate the International Day of Museums (IMD).
The pandemic that befell us in 2020 caused severe damage to the museum sector, which turned out to be one of the most affected – economically, socially, psychologically.
Many museums around the world have closed their doors forever or for certain periods, others have reduced their activities to a minimum. However, the difficult situation has provoked decisive action, especially in the area of digitalisation and the creation of a new experience of cultural dissemination. In this situation, ICOM-headquarters appeals: “This is a crucial moment for our societies and we call on museums to lead the change. The time has come to rethink our relationship with the communities we serve, to experiment with new models of cultural experience and to reaffirm the essential value of museums in building a just and sustainable future. ” imposed by the digital format, the activities of IMD 2020 reached over 83,000,000 users on social networks in just the day of May 18! ”
In this sense is the announced topic for IMD 2021: “The future of museums: to restore and rediscover” “We must defend the creative potential of culture as an engine for recovery and innovation in the post-Kovid era,” ICOM urged. I wish everyone a successful and fruitful, despite everything, Museum Day on May 18!
I take this opportunity to congratulate the board on the upcoming Holiday of Bulgarian Culture – May 24!
With respect,
Prof. Mila Santova,
Doctor of Sciences
Chairman of the BNC of ICOM
