After French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting Mona Lisa would be moved to a separate room, accessible independently of the Louvre, the world’s most famous museum has made another surprise move related to the Mona Lisa.

The director of the Louvre, Laurence de Carre, wants to introduce a special ticket for the painting, which visitors will have to buy additionally at the entrance to the most visited museum in the world. De Carre announced this on Sunday on France Inter radio, AFP reported.

“The idea is to have a ticket for the Louvre that gives access to the permanent collections and exhibitions, and if you want to see the Mona Lisa, it will be with an additional ticket to access the painting,” De Carre said.

After the director warned Culture Minister Rachida Dati in a letter about the state of the museum, President Emmanuel Macron made several announcements at the end of January about the upcoming renovation of the Louvre. He said the work should be completed by 2031 to provide a new space and a separate entrance for the Mona Lisa.

The Leonardo da Vinci painting will be “accessible independently of the rest of the museum and will therefore have its own entrance ticket,” Macron said.

Asked by France Inter radio on Sunday, Laurence De Carre said the Mona Lisa would likely be installed in “a special space that will allow visitors to finally look at this painting in peace.”

“Our proposal is to adopt an exceptional status for the Mona Lisa,” she insisted, describing the work as “a blessing for the Louvre,” she added.
