Condolences on behalf of the Bulgarian National Committee of ICOM

It is with deep sorrow that we learned of the passing of Dr. Ekaterina Tsekova – long-time director of the National Polytechnic Museum (NPTM) and a leading figure in Bulgarian museum work. Her loss is immense for all who knew her and worked with her.

Dr. Tsekova was an active member of the International Council of Museums, and for many years was also part of the Board of Directors of the Bulgarian National Committee of ICOM. Her contribution to the development of ICOM Bulgaria and in support of the international museum community is great. She created important connections and contributed to the strengthening of the professional network of museums in Bulgaria.

Dr. Ekaterina Tsekova graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, specializing in philosophy, history of culture and English. She is one of the pioneers in the field of museum communication in Bulgaria, starting her career in 1987 as a tour guide and curator at the National Museum of History. Later, she held leading positions, including in the Republican Scientific and Methodological Center for Museology, and since 2004 she has been the head of the NPTM. Under her leadership, the museum has established itself as a leading institution in the preservation and popularization of Bulgarian science and technology.

For more than 20 years, she taught museum communication and museum education at the Faculty of Philosophy and History of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. She is the author of numerous studies and monographs that have significantly enriched knowledge in the field of museology and museum communication.

For her significant contribution to the development and popularization of Bulgarian museum culture, Dr. Tsekova was awarded the prestigious “Golden Age” award of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Bulgaria. She is also the recipient of a number of other prestigious awards from educational and non-governmental organizations.
Her dedication to the museum and Bulgarian culture will remain unforgettable. She was a person with a big heart, dedicated to her work and to the people she worked with. We express our sincere condolences to her family, colleagues and all who knew and appreciated her.

A tribute to her bright memory!

The funeral will take place on July 25, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. in the church “St. Sedmochislenitsi”.
