The new temporary exhibition at RAM-Plovdiv examines the role of women in human history and their assigned place in different societies. The selected finds are from key archaeological sites for science from Plovdiv (Yasya Tepe, the Flat Mound on Brezovsko Shosse, Nebet Tepe, the Western Necropolis of Philippopolis), Dolnoslav, Skutare, Velingrad, Kapitan Dimitrievo, Pazardzhik, Stara Zagora, Novo Zagora, Kazanlak.

The exhibition includes miniature figurines, statuettes, votive tablets, amulets, vessels, jewelry, ornaments and coins made of clay, stone, bone, marble, shells of mussels and conchs, bronze and glass, dated to the period 4th millennium BC – 18th century.

The Woman… divine, mysterious, protective and inspiring… She has different names, different roles, different professions. It is associated with the divine mystery of creation.

Many of the exhibits presented resemble a pregnant woman with her arms spread out to the sides – a pose of adoration.

One of the most intriguing highlights is the computed tomography of a fragment (leg) of a late Neolithic ceramic table from the Flat Settlement Mound in Plovdiv, shaped like a stylised body of a pregnant woman.

The exhibition is accompanied by an audio guide – in Bulgarian and English.
