Dear colleagues from museums and universities, esteemed admirers of the historical knowledge,
Once again, since 1977, on the 18th of May, we celebrate International Museum Day.
This year, the holiday is celebrated under the motto “Museums Unite a Divided World”.
Few institutions in the world have the opportunity to create connections between generations, ethnicities, and nations from different parts of the world. Today, museums are a place of dialogue and inclusion, of exchange of ideas and stories, of knowledge, and of educational practices. The cultural values and intangible testimonies of human history that they seek out, shelter, and care for are proof that diversity can build bridges, not divide.
In 2026, when we will celebrate the 80th anniversary of ICOM, museums will continue to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and will make efforts to reduce inequalities, build just and peaceful societies, maintain old and create new partnerships.
On behalf of the international museum organisation, I invite all Bulgarian museums to join in making a collective commitment to UNITY, DIALOGUE AND PEACE.
Happy holiday!
Be healthy and filled with confidence that good always wins!
Prof. Dr. Svetla Dimitrova
President of ICOM Bulgaria
